DUBAI police on Sunday questioned Bahrain Sheikh Ali Salman, who heads the largest spiritual Shiite opposition formation Al-Wefaq, about comments to "sectarian and safety" related matters, the authorities said.

Criminal investigation police questioned him in the presence of two lawyers about statements that he earlier this month, during a visit to Egypt, according to a statement made by the BNA state news agency.

Salman admitted that refers to a ' revolution ' in Bahrain but he said "meant not the overthrow of the regime, while he referred to requirements of freedom, democracy, equality and respect for human rights", said the BNA.

The influential cleric also said that Wefaq "violence from all sides, rejects or of the public or the Government", and denied harming relations between Bahrain and Egypt.

BNA said Salman the Declaration will be presented to the public prosecutor who will decide whether to press the charges.

Al Wefaq, the convocation of its leader for questioning, called it a "trial for political practice and advice, which falls under the regime security approach of confiscation of rights and freedoms." "This measure would tighten the already limited freedom of expression," she said in a statement.

Al Wefaq dominated elections twice in 2006 and 2010 on Shiite areas of the Kingdom Sunni ruled, and the biggest one block formed in both parliaments.
