DOHA THE Middle East regional round of Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Programme, which aims at increasing awareness about media law among law students, is all set to take place in Doha on Tuesday.

The competition, which has attracted potential lawyers from different Arab countries, is organised by Qatar University in collaboration with Al Jazeera Media Training & Development Centre, University of Oxford and Annenberg University of Pennsylvania.

Six teams are participating in the competition from Qatar University, Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, UAE University, Baghdad University and Jordan University.

The organisers of the competition have put on a training workshop at Qatar University College of Law to prepare participants for their oral presentations.

In his opening remarks at the training session, Dr.

Hassan Okour, Dean of the College of Law, expressed the college’s pride in hosting this competition.

“This is an important event to raise awareness among law students about the importance of media law, especially at this critical time in the history of the region” he stated.

“We are honoured to host this group of participants in the moot court competition and we hope that each one of you will take full advantage of this experience to meet your fellow colleagues form other parts of the Arab world to exchange experiences and ideas”, he added.

“The moot court competition is about international media law that talks about freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of privacy that is contained in international and regional treaties. The moot court competition is held to create an interest in media law, communication technologies and freedom of expression issues.

The hope is that as the Price Moot Court Programme increases in size and geographical diversity, it will nurture comparative research and build a global network of media lawyers and research partners” explained Chris Evers of Legal Writing and Advocacy Skills Programme.

Deeksha Sharma from the University of Oxford and a previous moot court judge presented the workshop by highlighting the key concepts of mooting, the rules of the competition and discussed the concerns of participants.

“This workshop is not just about this completion, this is to prepare you for your future careers. And the fact that this moot court will be in an international setting, it will help you understand the cultural sensitivities of this field” she explained.

The Price Media Law Moot Court Programme, launched in 2008, is organised by the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy. The programme started as a single Moot Court Competition held at Oxford University to foster an interest in media law, communication technologies and freedom of expression issues.

The Price Media Law Moot Court Programme is named in honour of Professor Monroe E. Price, founder of the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy, in recognition of his lifelong devotion and outstanding contribution to the development of media freedom and the rule of law.
