Tragedy strikes Katara waterfront

TRAGEDY struck Katara Cultural Village beach on Saturday when experienced racer Rashid al Mansouri died in an accident during the third round of the Pleasure Boat Racing.

The mishap happened during the third lap of the race, while negotiating Buoy 3. On a windswept day, the ill-fated boat hit a big wave, flipped through the air twice or thrice, before landing face-down in the water.

Rescue boats rushed to the spot and brought the two drivers ashore, and though the Red Cross team tried to resuscitate Mansouri, the impact of the accident was so severe that Mansouri’s neck had broken. His co-driver, Zayed, escaped with a fractured leg.

The accident forced organisers to call off the season, scrapping the remaining two rounds.
