DOHA GEORGETOWN University in Qatar (GU-Q) awarded 43 graduation diplomas in International Politics, International Economics, Culture and Politics, to 27 men and 16 women, representing 27 nationalities in the official commencement ceremony held at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) on Saturday.

Referring to the class of 2013, Dean Nonneman said, “The class of 2013 represents some of the best examples of our values in action. They are forever bonded as classmates, as graduates and as alumni of the thriving Georgetown community. I am really proud of their accomplishments and look forward to the wonderful contributions that each of them will make to our world a better place.” The dean’s opening remarks were followed by a presentation from keynote speaker and Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority HE Abdulla bin Hamad al Attiyah, who thanked Georgetown for “advancing Qatar’s strategy of building a knowledge economy and society,” and thanked the Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation, for “their leadership in making Qatar home for a renowned world-class institution such as GU-Qatar.” During the Tropaia award ceremony held earlier in the week, Al Jawhara Hassan al Thani, a culture and politics major, was recognised for the prestigious honour of receiving both the Abu Hamid Al Ghazali Award, which is given to a student by the GU-Q faculty, and the Dean’s Medal, which honours the student with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA).

Malik Habayeb, who graduated with a degree in international politics, was honoured as the recipient of the International Politics Outstanding Student Award.

Al Jawhara and Eilin Francis, an international economics major, both of whom graduated with honours, were previously recognised for being chosen as HBKU President’s Award recipients this year, a prestigious award that recognises six Education City campus students who have demonstrated academic excellence and have made significant contributions to their communities.

John J DeGioia, president of Georgetown University in Washington DC, conferred the degrees on the graduating students, and congratulated them for the successful completion of years of hard work and effort. The GU-Q graduating class of 2013 will join the 125 graduates who have already walked in the commencement ceremonies since the Georgetown branch campus was established in Education City in 2005.
