ITALY’S commercial mission will open a bureau in Qatar in collaboration with the Italian embassy in Doha by the end of 2013, the mission’s attache in Dubai Fernando Fiore said, citing growing significance of the Qatari market for his country and its firms.
Fiore told a press conference at the Italian embassy in Doha that the Dubai bureau used to serve the UAE, Qatar and Oman, but added that due to growing interest of Italian businesses, the bureau decided to establish an office in Doha to facilitate commercial ties between Italian and Qatari firms and work to attract Italian investments to Doha.
For his part, Italian Ambassador to Qatar HE Guido De Sanctis said Italian exports to Doha were up to $1.025 billion in 2011, adding that they grew by 54 percent in 2012 with machinery heading the list of exported products, followed by furniture.
De Sanctis said around 90 Italian companies participated in the Project Qatar 2013 exhibition, which was held last week.
Italian businesses are interested in the Qatari market as it offers promising opportunities amid huge economic growth and ambitious infrastructure plans ahead of the 2022 World Cup, he said.
The Italian ambassador added that Italian companies are also interested in the field of power generation from renewable energy sources, which is an area of common interest between Italy and Qatar.
He hailed the role of the Italian-Qatari business council in luring Italian businesses to the Qatari market, adding that his country is working to improve coordination between private companies and government institutions in relation to commercial presence in the Gulf region.
He also pointed to the presence of several Qatari businessmen in Italy such as the tourism investments in Sardinia.
