More rains, thunderstorm expected today

DOHA EVEN as a heavy downpour lashed different parts of Qatar leading to water-logging in several areas of the country on Saturday, the department of Meteorology has warned against thunderstorms on Sunday and also forecasted recurrence of rains during the next couple of days.

The Ministry of Interior has requested residents through social networking site Facebook to comply with the safety guidelines and drive slow and use both hands on the steering wheel to avert accidents in the wake of Met’s warnings of continued thundershowers, strong winds and high waves with low visibility.

Talking to Qatar Tribune the Head of Forecast and Analysis section at MET Office Abdulla Mohammed al Mannai said, “Low pressure over the Arabian Sea caused the thundershowers.

Indications are that similar weather conditions will prevail on Sunday as well leading to heavy rain coupled with strong wind in different parts of the country. There is a possibility of a slight rain on Monday also.” The weather report said, “The situation is expected to continue till Monday but with a gradual retreat in the intensity of the instability. The weather is going to be partly cloudy to cloudy at times accompanied by showers and thundershowers at times and at places and moderate northwest–northeast surface wind, freshening at times with thunderstorms.” The Met department has issued specific instructions to fishermen to not to go for fishing without the permission of the concerned department during the next couple of days. Besides all government departments have been directed to keep in touch with the Meteorology Department for updates on weather.

Meanwhile, various areas including Mesaieed, Shahaniya, Al Wakra and Doha witnessed an intermittent spell of thundershowers on Saturday leading to water-logging on many roads in Al Wakra, Doha, Al Hilal and Abu Hamour.

People and vehicles waded through the waterlogged streets in different parts of the country.

Besides, strong winds reportedly caused a tree to fall at Sheraton Park following which Police and Civil Defence officials rushed to the spot and evacuated the people from there.

The Civil Defence Department also conducted water draining operations in different localities for the convenience of residents.
